Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit 2026: Payment Dates, Eligibility & Amounts

The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit 2026 is a tax-free quarterly payment designed to help eligible Canadians with low and modest incomes manage the cost of groceries and other everyday essentials.

The CGEB replaced the GST/HST credit in July 2026. Although the name has changed, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) says the eligibility rules, payment calculation and basic structure remain the same. The benefit amount increased by 25% starting in July 2026, and the increase will remain in place for five years.

The CGEB is normally paid four times a year.

How Much Can You Get from the CGEB?

For the July 2026 to June 2027 payment period, the CRA uses information from your 2025 tax return to calculate your Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit 2026 amount.

You could receive up to:

Family SituationMaximum Amount
Single individual$679
Married or common-law couple$890
Each eligible child under 19$234

These are maximum amounts, not guaranteed payments. Your actual benefit depends on factors including your adjusted family net income, marital status and the number of eligible children in your family.

The CRA recalculates the benefit when relevant information changes, so your payments may increase, decrease or stop depending on your circumstances.

Who Is Eligible for the CGEB?

To qualify, you generally must be a resident of Canada for income tax purposes both at the end of the month before a payment and at the beginning of the month in which the payment is made.

You must also generally be at least 19 years old in the month before receiving your Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit 2026 quarterly payment.

If you are under 19, you may still qualify if you have or previously had a spouse or common-law partner, or if you are or were a parent and live or lived with your child.

Eligibility also depends on your adjusted family net income. Because the income threshold varies according to family situation and number of children, there is not one income cut-off that applies to everyone.

Do You Need to Apply for the CGEB?

For most Canadian residents, there is no separate CGEB application.

When you file your income tax return, the CRA automatically considers you for the benefit and determines whether you qualify.

You should file a tax return every year even if you had little or no income. If you have a spouse or common-law partner, they should also file their tax return so the CRA has the information required to calculate your household benefit.

Filing late may temporarily interrupt your payments. After the CRA assesses your return, it will determine your entitlement and may issue eligible missed amounts retroactively.

What If You Are New to Canada?

New residents of Canada have different application rules.

You do not have to wait until you file your first Canadian tax return to apply for the CGEB during your first year as a resident for income tax purposes.

New residents without children can apply using Form RC151.

New residents with children under 19 may also use RC151 to apply and register their children. However, if you are eligible for the Canada Child Benefit (CCB), the CRA directs you to use Form RC66 instead because the information provided can also be used to determine your CGEB eligibility.

Only one CGEB application per household is required.

What Was the June 2026 One-Time Top-Up?

Before the CGEB officially replaced the GST/HST credit, the federal government issued a separate one-time GST/HST credit top-up on June 5, 2026.

This payment generally provided an additional amount equal to 50% of the annual GST/HST credit for the July 2025 to June 2026 benefit period.

To receive the top-up, you generally needed to have filed your 2024 tax return and been entitled to the January 2026 GST/HST credit.

This one-time payment is separate from the regular CGEB amounts for the July 2026 to June 2027 payment period.
